The Only Four Letter Word That Will Ever Leave a Lasting Impression

It can make or break you, it can prevent you from ever getting business, it stays with a person their whole life, people hear it all the time except from strangers, they buy items with it on it, everyone listens for it, even if It's whispered. Did you know what it is?

It's the sweet sound of our own name. No matter what you say, it's the most important thing we own. When in business, our name becomes associated with our reputation. The first time you meet someone; Always ask for their name immediately after you introduce yourself. For example, start with "Hello, my name is Darlene and you are?" Then wait for a response. Immediately repeat their name and say, "Nice to meet you, Jan So tell me about the company you're with?" Continue asking open ended questions while incorporating their first name one or two times. If you say it too much, it will lose it's impact. However, if you say it back to them, they will listen closer and remember you more.

If you meet at a networking function, go ahead and ask for their business card. Once you get their card, take a minute to look at it, review their name, and then look at their face to associate it as much as possible. Whatever you do, do not just grab their card and stuff it in your pocket without glancing at it. I can not tell you how important this one little step is but imagine how you might feel if someone did not take an extra second to even look at your card. Play a game with trying to remember their name. Do they have any unusual or prominent features that stand out to you?

Maybe they have an incredible smile or they're extremely tall, make a mental note about that and associate their name with that feature. If you have a chance, write those features down on the back of their card to refresh your memory later on. The next time you see them; Do your best to recall their name. I've heard many people say they can usually remember their face but are terrible at remembering names. That may be the case, but I do not recommend saying that to a person you are trying to impress. Bottom line, if you can not remember someone's name that conveys a message to them that you do not think they're that important to you. If you think you know their name but are not 100% sure, do not risk guessing it.

This could possibly annoy the person or leave them feeling frustrated that you could not get their name correct. Instead, tell them it's nice to see them again and you were looking for their card recently then politely ask for another. Take a glance at their card and get their name. Take a few minutes to acknowledge them and then call them by name. At some point, you should start remembering who they are and can call them by name easily. Once you do, take time to introduce them by name to someone else you know by name. This will impress your prospects and will strengthen your chances of having potential business together.
